Mentor Spotlight: Samantha Azzarello – You Don’t Need the Perfect Career Story

Samantha Azzarello leads digital transformation initiatives at a large multinational bank in NYC, focusing on making complex systems and processes work better for the people who use them. She is a mentor and mentee at OneUpOneDown. In this Mentor Spotlight, Samantha dives into why she mentors and what she gets out of the expereience.

Why She Started Mentoring

“I’ve navigated my career without a built-in network or roadmap, so I know how valuable it is to have someone in your corner, to bounce ideas off of, talk through different perspectives,” Samantha explains. She mentors because she remembers what it was like to figure things out alone.

“Becoming a mentor is my way of paying it forward, and living my values of kindness and community. The most rewarding part is seeing a mentee realize they’re capable of more than they thought and watching them take that next bold step.”

What She’s Learned as a Mentor

“Mentorship sharpens my listening skills and challenges me to articulate lessons I’ve learned in a way that’s actionable for someone else,” Samantha notes. But she’s also learned something important about leadership itself: “It’s been a reminder that leadership isn’t about having all the answers, rather it’s about asking good questions and creating space for others to find their answers.”

Her Approach to Professional Development

Samantha is big on mindset work. “I’m a big believer in mindset as a superpower and competitive advantage. Journaling and self-reflecting is a tool I come back to again and again—it’s about mastering your inner dialogue so you can stay calm, clear, and focused, no matter the challenge.”

When it comes to leadership development, Samantha offers some great advice: “In business, yes, technical skills and knowledge matter, but mental clarity and emotional control are what allow you to become an effective leader.”

Why Mentorship Works

“Mentorship is a catalyst, it accelerates learning, builds confidence, and forges meaningful connections,” Samantha explains. “It’s also a powerful reminder, especially for women in business, that you don’t have to figure it all out alone.”

Impact doesn’t always come from big moments alone; it can be a series of insights that lead to breakthroughs: “One conversation can offer guidance, spark an idea, or simply make you feel supported and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need to take the next step or to move forward.”

Her Message to Potential Mentors

“You don’t need to have a perfect career story to be a great mentor, you just need to show up with curiosity, generosity, and honesty. Your experiences, including the mistakes, can be exactly what someone else needs to hear to take their next step.”

This approach removes the pressure to be perfect and focuses on being helpful instead.

Thank you, Samantha, for showing how authentic mentorship creates real impact for both mentors and mentees.
