oVERVIEW:

The FIA Women in Motorsport Commission, established in 2009, was created to drive motorsport’s inclusivity and recognise women’s contributions across all aspects of the industry, from competitors and officials to engineers and team managers. It promotes women’s roles through media, events, and partnerships, develops educational and social programs to boost female participation, and raises awareness of road safety among young women involved in motorsport.

The FIA Women in Motorsport Commission launched the Women in Motorsport Mentorship Programme to facilitate growth and knowledge sharing within the industry by pairing experienced women with those wanting to get into motorsport and those already in it.

tHE CHALLENGE:

Before engaging with OneUpOneDown, the FIA faced a pressing challenge: launching a large-scale mentorship programme that could effectively connect participants from diverse geographic regions and backgrounds in motorsport. They needed a scalable solution to manage a large number of participants while ensuring that the matches were meaningful and impactful.

Pain Points:

  • Lack of an efficient system to manage and scale mentorship matches.
  • Difficulty in creating tailored matches between mentors and mentees with varying expertise, career stages, and geographic locations.
  • Missed opportunities for growth and development.

THE SOLUTION:

The FIA chose OneUpOneDown for its ability to provide an intelligent, data-driven mentor-matching platform, focused on matching women. The platform’s sophisticated matching algorithm, focus on whole-person mentorship and dedication to supporting women into leadership positions, aligned perfectly with the FIA’s mission to provide a high-quality, impactful programme for women in motorsport.

Implementation Process:

  • Programme Launch: OneUpOneDown’s mentorship platform was launched at the FIA 2024 Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan and during the WIM networking event at Le Mans, France.
  • Intelligent Matching: Using advanced algorithms, OneUpOneDown facilitated 280 tailored matches with an impressive 93% success rate, ensuring compatibility and alignment between mentors and mentees.

Comprehensive Support: The platform provided ongoing match management, tracking, and reporting tools to maintain programme quality and offer insights into engagement metrics.

  • 58% of participants chose to be both a mentor and mentee, demonstrating their desire to learn and develop themselves and give back to other women in the industry. 31% of participants signed up to be mentees only, and 11% signed up as mentors.

Having a high number of women willing to be both mentors and mentees helped to create a well-balanced pool. Being both a mentor and mentee is beneficial for women moving into leadership positions, as it’s a great way to develop leadership skills.

  • The average age of women who signed up to be both a mentor and mentee was 36. The average age of mentees was 27 and the average age of mentors was 43.

  • 51% of women who signed up to be mentors were willing to mentor more than one mentee. This demonstrates how strong and supportive this community is in their willingness to give back and help other women in the industry.
