“Having lacked a mentor in the past, I learned important lessons through challenging experiences. I believe my skills should be utilized effectively to contribute meaningfully and attract new talent.”

Bringing New Members Into the Field

Syed’s motivation to mentor comes from a consistent interest in helping new team members find their footing. “I am consistently eager to introduce new members to the WASH team. The most rewarding moments are when I observe individuals learning, developing their skills, and beginning to apply them in the field.”

Watching Mentees Become Subject Matter Experts

Syed points to a specific outcome that has stayed with him. “I’ve mentored members of the national team who have achieved recognition, published their work, and now serve as international WASH subject matter specialists.”

Learning From the People He Mentors

Syed describes the mentorship relationship as ongoing learning. “I believe in continuous learning and exploration; I have acquired new insights from mentees who consistently bring a smile to my face when I apply their knowledge in the field.”

His Advice to First-Time Mentors

Syed frames mentoring as something to approach actively, not cautiously. “Engage actively to explore the water depth and acquire skills to get you to the other side.”

Why He Believes Mentorship Matters

Syed’s motivation stems from his own experience without a mentor. “Having lacked a mentor in the past, I learned important lessons through challenging experiences. I believe my skills should be utilized effectively to contribute meaningfully and attract new talent.”

What He Recommends

When asked for a book, tool or resource recommendation, Syed points to the SPHERE standards.
